Perdonen, no me he podido resistir. Al ver un video como el del post anterior no he podido constreñir el patriotismo del hijo de la Gran Bretaña que llevo dentro. Inmediatamente he asido mi flamante flauta dulce y mis dedos han transformado mi aliento en ese modelo de universalidad y liberalismo que es Rule Britannia (y sí, el “fa” debería ser bemol… o algo así, pero la intención es lo que cuenta):

Este himno es básicamente una canción patriótica Británica, que se inspira en un poema de James Thomson y al que Thomas Arne le puso música en 1740. Es famosa la versión que todos los años se canta en The “Last Night of the Proms” (”última noche de los PROMS”, que es una especie de festival que organiza la BBC, vean este video para hacerse una idea de la que se arma).

Personalmente, mi versión preferida es la cantada por Bryn Terfel, precisamente en una de esas galas de los PROMS, la de 1994, acompañado por la Orquesta Sinfónica de la BBC. Pueden escucharla aquí. La versión que canta es una de cuatro versos, el tercero de los cuales lo canta en galés, idioma materno del genial barítono.

La letra reza así (discúlpenme si no la traduzco entera…):

Para los más negados en el idioma de Shakespeare, el estribillo viene a decir algo así como “¡Gobierna, Britannia! gobierna las olas: los británicos jamás serán esclavos”.
